In Memory of a Father and a Husband
On last Tuesday morning, Jan. 8, 1929, just at the dawn of day, the death angels came and took from us our dear, sweet daddy and husband, Mr. Homer Polk, age 69.
He had been sick with flu for several days and seemed to be improving, had gotten able to be up for a day or two, and relapsed taking pneumonia last Sunday morning, Jan. 6th. He suffered death for two days and nights, and realized that his time was near several hours before death struck him.
He told some members of the family just a short while before he died that the sting of death was hard but was on him and he hated so bad to die and leave his dear wife, children, and grand-children, but if it was God's will for it to be done that he was ready to go, for he was not afraid to die for he was going to Jesus. He then called for his wife, children, grand-children, and all neighbors and friends present to come and tell him good-by. He gave each one a hearty hand shake telling them to meet him in Heaven, and requested the children to strive to live so they would be ready to meet him when God called.
But oh, how sad it was to meet dear father and husband in death, however we know he has gone to be with our Heavenly Father where sorrow, pain, toil, nor trouble will ever come and there await the coming of the family and friends. But a place is vacant in our home that can never be filled. Oh, how we miss his dear presence, his sweet voice has been hushed never to be heard again and a father and husband's presence has been taken from us to await the time when we shall join where there will be no more parting nor farewells. Oh how we do miss our dear father and husband.
Our hearts are broken and bleeding. We long to hear his sweet voice again but we realize that the Lord never makes a mistake in plucking His flowers from the garden.
He leaves a wife; one sister, Mrs. John McPhail, of Winnsboro, La.; and ten children, eight of whom are living, and fifteen grand-children to mourn his death; Terrell and Claude, who still remain at the old home with their mother; Bennie, of the Clem community; Mrs. T. H. Pouncey, of Seminary, Mrs. J. J. Carter, of Bogalusa, La.; Mrs. Alonzo Pouncey, of Sumrall; Mrs. C. M. Hathorn, of Mt. Olive; and Mrs. Clinton Smith, of Mt. Olive.
His funeral service was held at Antioch church, conducted by Bro. Tom Dale, of Collins, assisted by Bro. Johnston of Mt. Olive, Bro. J. O. Buckley and Bro. Davis, of Prentiss. His body is now resting in the Antioch Cemetery to await the coming of our Lord.
We wish to thank each and every one who lent a helping hand during the illness of our dear father and husband, and especially do we thank Dr. Nichols, Dr. McNease, and the good nurse, Miss Dora Nelson, for their kind and good attention. We also thank the Carson High School for the beautiful wreath and all who contributed in the floral offering.
